Program Objectives:
This 8 week program has been designed to prepare participants for entry level positions in the growing log home industry. Participants will be given a review of the theory of log home construction as well as the thorough hands-on practical training required to see a project through to completion.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this program, the student will:
Understand log construction – Its history and future
Understand construction properties of raw logs
Be able to acquire construction materials
Be aware of tools and machinery required
Understand factors for adequate job-site
Be able to implement all safety practices
Familiarize himself / herself with a particular job-site
Understand and execute proper crane hand signals
Know how to maintain a chainsaw
Know how to sharpen a chainsaw
Know how to chainsaw cut timbers
Know how to brush wood with chainsaw
Be able to cut notches and scarfs
Be able to cut coves and lateral grooves
Understand and install temporary foundations
Calculate diagonal measurements from plans
Be able to read and understand log home plans
Cut and prepare ½ and ¾ round logs
Pick log material for stacking log walls
Know how to load, rough notch and set up logs for scribing
Understand scribes and scribe distances
Understand notch under scribe
Be able to lay-out and cut windows and doors
Accurately lay-out and cut joists and plate logs including pitch plate logs
Know how to accurately square-off log post
Be able to lay-out and cut log roof components (ridges / purlins)
Know how to lay-out and cut log end profiles and log wall archways
Understand how to manufacture log stairs
Understand how to build log handrail, both straight and diagonal
Be able to clean-up and prepare log shell for tear-down and delivery
Know how to label and tear-down log shell
Understand em-seal and wool insulation and re-assembly
Understand log shrinkage factors
Understand how to start their own log home company
